Born in the Midwest, Philip Abbott was the other series regular who was on The FBI for all nine season, providing a fatherly presence on the series and an occasional source of conflict.

A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Mr. Abbott made his TV debut in The Crisis, a live show broadcast in Chicago in 1949. He considered becoming an airline pilot at one time, but his wife, Jane Dufrayne, persuaded him out of this.

By the time The FBI aired, Mr. Abbott had established himself as an actor, doing roles in such shows as Perry Mason and The Twilight Zone. Mr. Abbott would continue his acting career right to the end of his life. His son, David Abbott, is also an actor.
