Valerie Hendricks, Paul Stoner, Karl Elman, et al: Espionage.
Original air date: 7 February 1971
The FBI has to deal with another espionage ring, this time located in Chicago. Eric Cross was under surveillance, but ends up in a bad altercation in the airport restroom. Hence, Inspector Erskine goes undercover and poses as him.
He manages to find the ringleader, “Constantine,” who turns out to be Valerie Hendricks (Phyllis Thaxter). What makes this story stand out is its humanity, and Ms. Thaxter’s performance. Her character has a brain tumor, and she has been marked for elimination.
And Inspector Erskine has to save her!
- FBI Carousel Bulletin: Agent Greene, meet your original incarnation. The part of Special Agent Kirby Greene was initially played by Anthony Eisley, who went on to play the recurring part of Special Agent Chet Randolph in over a dozen episodes, including this one. Agent Greene appeared in a handful of episodes and was each time played by a different actor, including Eisley, Grant Williams, Jim McKrell, Jim Raymond, and Phil Dean. Well, not quite each time: Dean-as-Greene actually makes a return appearance in this episode.
- Speaking of which, Anthony Eisley (at right in above photo) returns as SAC Chet Randolph, and he makes his presence known. Born Frederick Glendenning in Philadelphia in 1925, he starred on Warner Brothers’ TV series Hawaiian Eye in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He passed away in 2003.
