John Marion Logan: KIDNAPPING EXTORTION
Original air date: 20 February 1972
Rerun 2 July 1972
Inspector Lew Erskine attempts to keep Paul Hale under surveillance as he sets out to pay the ransom for his father. Turns out there is more to the kidnapping that might meet the eye. The good inspector had to deal with a dysfunctional family, while the father of said family was kidnapped out of retribution for his putting the kidnapper, the owner of a lumber yard, out of business.
Once again, we hear that eerie reverberating horn that was featured in Season Six.
Overall, a twisted story that has a fine cast and a nailbiter ending, complete with rats.
- This episode marked the final appearance of veteran actor Kenneth MacDonald, who played in many Three Stooges shorts, as well as on Perry Mason. Mr. MacDonald died on 5 May 1972, three days after J. Edgar Hoover. Ironically, in the 1955 Three Stooges short Blunder Boys, he has the role of “F.B. Eye.”
- Harold Gould once again makes another appearance here.
- Robert Foxworth makes the first of two appearances on the series, as does Victor Mohica. Both would reappear in Season 9.
- Once again, Bill Quinn makes an appearance; he is Bob Newhart’s father-in-law.
- Director Michael O’Herlihy is the brother of actor Dan O’Herlihy.
